  • Sulfasalazine (Saaz) is used to treat various inflammatory conditions of the joints (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis), skin (psoriasis), and bowel (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease).

This causes pain and swelling in the joints. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) helps to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It makes the immune system function normally and prevents it from attacking the body. This medicine gives relief from the symptoms such as pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. This helps in easy movement and makes you do your daily activities more easily. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) also limits damage to the joints and helps to prevent disability in the long term. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) does not work straight away. Improvement in symptoms occurs gradually from about 6 to 12 weeks after starting the treatment. Other medicines may be given to improve your symptoms while waiting for Sulfasalazine (Saaz) to work. In Ulcerative colitis Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes redness and swelling in the large intestine and the rectum (lower part of large intestine). This can cause bleeding, frequent passing of stool and stomach pain. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) reduces the pain and swelling and gives you relief from these symptoms. It reduces the discomfort and helps you to live your life normally. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) if taken as prescribed can prevent the return of ulcerative colitis flare (return or worsening of your symptoms). Drink plenty of fluids while taking it to make sure you stay hydrated. In Crohn’s disease Crohn's disease is a condition that causes redness and swelling in any part of the digestive system. It can affect any part of the digestive system, from mouth to the anus. It can cause severe stomach pain. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) works by blocking chemicals causing pain and swelling. Thereby giving relief and helping you to live a normal life. You should always take it as it has been prescribed for you. In Ankylosing spondylitis Ankylosing spondylitis is a condition that mainly affects the spine. It causes severe pain and stiffness from the neck to the lower back. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) acts by lowering the activity of chemicals that causes pain and swelling. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) slows down any damage caused by the disease and reduces the possibility of long-term disability. Sulfasalazine (Saaz) is a slow-acting medicine so you won’t notice an immediate effect but they’re very effective over a period of time. So it is advisable to take it as prescribed by your doctor. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies. 3) Sulfasalazine (Saaz) is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby. 4) Sulfasalazine (Saaz) does not usually affect your ability to drive. 5) Sulfasalazine (Saaz) should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Please consult your doctor. Missed Dose If you miss a dose of Sulfasalazine (Saaz), take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
